Dubrovnik is a delightful place commonly known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” situated in the southern part of Croatia. A city whose medieval architecture is perfectly intact, with clear sea waters and gorgeous landscapes, Dubrovnik is a magnet for tourists. Historically inclined, a nature lover, or just a leisure traveler, Dubrovnik presents a number of opportunities that fit everybody’s desires. The reasons why travelers should visit Dubrovnik will be discussed in this article, including historic significance and beautiful sites.
The Old Town of Dubrovnik now provides its visitors with a complex of narrow streets, and every street hides a piece of history. When I move through these streets, I am aware that only a few decades ago, the feeling of modernity that comes with the twentieth century was just around the corner. Some of these are the Rector’s Palace, which is a Renaissance-style building, and the Sponza Palace, which is a Gothic-Renaissance building. These show the political and cultural history of the city, and therefore paying a visit to the Old Town is something that every traveller to Dubrovnik should consider doing.
Perhaps the most popular attraction of the city is the City Walls. They are some of the best preserved in Europe and will give you a historic look into the city. Along the walls you’ll find such gems as Fort Lovrijenac—a lookout from the 16th century with a breathtaking view of the sea—and Fort Bokar, a round fortress that is also an excellent place to see the city and the sea.
Hollywood stars Lovaničić and Lau are in awe of Dubrovnik’s picturesque looks. If you want to have an incredible view of the city and the environment, you should visit Mount Srd. It has a hiking trail to the top, or for the adventurous, there is a cable car where you are rewarded with a view of the old town, city walls, and the blue Adriatic Sea. There is another fabulous natural wonder on Lokrum Island, which lies on the seashore of Dubrovnik. The island is green and full of gardens, some rocks, beautiful beaches, and trails for walking, and it is wonderful for a day trip.
Culture is also very active in Dubrovnik. The works of Croatian artists from the Renaissance period to contemporary art can be seen at the Dubrovnik Art Gallery, and the theatre and music and dance lovers should not miss the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. The festival has been held every year, and the events take place in different venues within Dubrovnik, with Sponza Palace and Rector’s Palace being two of the most stunning venues where performances can be seen in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
It is impossible to be bored in Dubrovnik—there are lots of interesting things to do. That is why if you are a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or you need to try water sports, you will find a lot of interesting things to do in Dubrovnik.
Persons who would like to get acquainted with the history of Dubrovnik can start with a walking tour in the Old Town. There are a number of sightseeing tours that provide a cultural and political aspect to many of the places you will be visiting throughout the day. Also, Game of Thrones enthusiasts can take a GOT-inspired tour in the show’s shooting locations, such as Blackwater Bay and Red Keep.
Apart from history, Dubrovnik is famous for the beautiful sandy beaches. Banje is one of the most famous beaches in Dubrovnik and is situated near the city walls outside of the town. Hedonists will enjoy its crystal clear water and a view of the Old Town—it is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. For those who love water activities, kayaking, paddleboarding, and boat rides to the islands are other great ways to spend a day in Dubrovnik. If you are after a sunbathe and swim in the sea or more of an action-packed water experience, Dubrovnik has its beaches covered.
In my opinion, there is no bad time for visiting Dubrovnik; this is because, depending on what you want to get out of the trip, you can plan your visit appropriately. Although it is possible to visit Dubrovnik at any time of the year, there are quite a few distinctions between high and low seasons.
The high tourist season in Dubrovnik starts in June and ends in August. This is when the city is most crowded and probably the worst time to look for a place to stay because the prices are high. However, the climate is good for beach activities and other outdoor activities.
Croatia, in particular Dubrovnik, has numerous hotels for tourists, luxurious hotels for high-class tourists, and cheap guesthouses for low-class tourists. Old town or beachside, there are many things for all ages and types of tourists to do in and around the city.
Luxury accommodation in the city is quite limited, but tourists willing to spend can choose from Hotel Excelsior, Villa Dubrovnik, and a few others. All these hotels provide great sea views, providing excellent and very comfortable services. These hotels offer luxurious accommodations with the proximity of the Old Town and other interesting spots.
Besides, for those who are tourists on a tight budget, Dubrovnik also provides budget-friendly accommodation. There are also good numbers of guesthouses, hostels, and small hotels that are available at reasonable prices all over the city. Most of these cheap accommodations are situated in the area where guests can easily reach the Old Town and the beach of Dubrovnik.
Dubrovnik is a city that offers something for every type of traveler. With its UNESCO World Heritage status, breathtaking attractions, and diverse activities, Dubrovnik is truly a must-visit destination. Make sure to add this incredible city to your travel bucket list—you won’t be disappointed!
